HISTORY
When Bill Hahn decided to retire and close the barber shop and poolroom, many people expressed genuine regret. They felt that this would be a serious blow to the town, as there would nowhere to gather and chat or spend a few hours. So, a group of citizens decided to contact New Horizons, explain our problem, and ask for assistance. This was in December 1972. These people were – Russ Blair, A Fjordbotten, Virginia Sakatch, Fedelia FitzpatricK, Rose Munro, Henry Hanson, Haven Hoge, Everett Sinnema, Lin Kellicut, Art Lang, Tom Dimm, Case Hykoop and Mary Hoge.
The town was approached and the council decided to buy the Vimy Pool Hall from Bill Hahn.
In 1973 we received a New Horizons’ grant, so renovations on the building began. Volunteers washed the walls, painted the whole interior white with orange and black trim, lifted the old, warn wooden floor and replaced it with subfloor and tile. The roof was repaired. Equipment was purchased, and donations gratefully received.
Then Preventive Social Services was contacted and we received some assistance from the province. The first P.S.S. Director was Lee Anderson, who gave us a lot of help and advice, and proved to be a good friend.
A hostess-custodian, Dorothy Dudley, was hired, rules drawn up, memberships sold, and we were in business.
On March 6th, 1974, an official board of directors was elected. There were Russ Blair – President; A. Fjordbotten – Vice President; Tom Dimm – 2nd Vice President, Lin Kellicut – Secretary –Treasurer; Mary Hoge – Recording Secretary; Wallace Daley; Fedilia Fitzpatrick; Case Hykoop; Henry Hanson; Tom Blair (Town Rep). On March 30, 1974, at 2:15 p.m., the Granum Drop-In was officially opened.
